I’ve always loved turtles. They have always inspired me. From the time that they come crawling up through the sand from the nest that their mother built and make their way to the vast expanse of their new ocean home, they seem to have an instinctual, persistent determination to survive – against all odds.
I included Turtle in the name of this website because it has long been a symbol for the Earth Mother and Goddess representing creation, protection, and the patient rhythm of time itself.
Many mythic traditions tell of a primordial turtle supporting the land, people, and even the cosmos on her back, echoing the role of a nurturing Goddess who holds all of life together. In these stories, the turtle stands for both the physical ground beneath our feet and the quiet, enduring presence of the Divine Feminine.
Many traditions note that the sections on a turtle’s shell can be counted and linked to the phases of the moon, reinforcing its association with lunar Goddesses and women’s cycles.
The turtle’s slow, deliberate movement mirrors the steady turning of months, seasons, and tides. It invites a Goddess-centered sense of time: cyclical rather than linear, patient rather than hurried, restorative rather than relentless.
Finally, the turtle’s shell has long evoked divine protection. She embodies a kind of soft power: gentle, yet secure. This shows us that true strength can be quiet and persistent, that retreat can be holy, and that the sacred feminine often works through the slow, steadfast unfolding of a life over many years.
Sea turtles are some of the longest-living animals – many species can live for over 100 years. As we watch their slow, graceful flight through the water, we are inspired by this wise message:
If I pace myself and protect my personal energy, I can safely and successfully swim through an ocean of possibilities.
